As a long retired drafter who morphed from hand drafting to CADD, I remember learning CADD on an IBM Fastdraft system in 1984.

This works for both parts and assemblies. It is compatible all the way up Inventor will save the CATProduct in the same directory as the Inventor assembly, but the subsequent CATParts get stored in a folder that it creates during the export. I want it to stop creating that folder and just save the parts next to the assembly, the same way the Inventor files are saved. If you're new to CAD software and is involved in mechanical engineering design, I'd suggest you start with Solidworks, as it is the main stream CAD software for mechanical engineers. Most people find its interface more intuitive. The current version of Solidworks has many of the features offered by Catia and Inventor.
